"Starting October 1, 2025, the Indian government has mandated the inclusion of air conditioning systems in the driver's cabin for all trucks produced within the country. This directive specifically targets N2 category trucks, ranging from 3.5 tonnes to 12 tonnes, as well as N3 trucks weighing over 12 tonnes.
The decision comes as a proactive measure to address the challenges posed by climate-induced discomfort and driver fatigue. By alleviating these issues, authorities anticipate a boost in driver alertness, subsequently mitigating the risks of accidents on highways.
To ensure compliance, stringent inspections will be conducted to verify that the air conditioning systems installed in the cabins meet the prescribed standards outlined by the government."
Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari earlier emphasized the crucial contribution of truck drivers in the country's transportation sector. He highlighted the necessity to tackle concerns related to their working environment. Gadkari expressed concern over truck drivers having to operate in harsh heat conditions. Despite facing opposition due to concerns about increased costs, the minister has persistently advocated for air-conditioned cabins, emphasizing their importance for the well-being of truck drivers.
