New Delhi: The Modi government at the Center on Friday announced that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will come into effect from January 10. The Union Home Ministry has issued a gazette notification stating that the law will come into effect from January 10, under which non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan will be granted citizenship of India.

The notification states that 'the Central Government exercising the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 1 of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (47 of 2019), on 10 January 2020, the date of the provision of the said law comes into effect. Decides as For the definition of who is a citizen of India, a law was formulated in the year 1955 which was named 'Citizenship Act 1955'. The Modi government has amended the same law which has been named 'Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016'.

According to the earlier 'Citizenship Act 1955', people were granted citizenship of India after 11 years only when there was a valid document. After the enactment of this law, there is a provision for granting citizenship of India to non-Muslim refugees i.e. Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India till 31 December 2014 due to religious persecution from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
