Mumbai: With a view to curbing hoarding of onions, the Modi government of the Center on Monday reduced the stock limit of onions of retail traders from five tonnes to two tonnes. Now any retail businessman will no longer be able to keep more than two tons of onion at a time. The decision taken by the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry on Monday came into force with immediate effect.

While issuing an official statement by the government, it has been said that the central government has urged the state governments to strictly implement this decision to stop hoarding of onions. It is noteworthy that last week, the Central Government had reduced the stock limit of onions for retail and wholesale traders by 50 percent to five tonnes and 25 tonnes respectively.
