New Delhi: The Modi government at the Center has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court justifying the ban imposed on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The Central Government has said that SIMI wanted to establish Islamic power in the country. Such an aim should be seen as being in direct conflict with the democratic sovereign structure of India. The Center said that this cannot be allowed in a secular society.

In its affidavit, the government stated that SIMI's jihad (religious war), which came into existence on April 25, 1977, was aimed at the destruction of nationalism and the establishment of Islamic rule or caliphate. The government said that this fundamentalist organization does not believe in the secular nature of the nation or the Indian Constitution. SIMI considers idol worship a sin and considers their duty to end it. SIMI was used by various extremist Islamic terrorist organizations operating from Jammu and Kashmir. Simultaneously, terrorist organizations like Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba have been able to cohere SIMI cadres to achieve their anti-national goals. The affidavit was filed by the Center in response to a special leave petition filed by Humam Ahmed Siddiqui, who challenged the 2019 notification, claiming to be a former member of SIMI.

Under this notification, the ban imposed on SIMI under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act was extended. Opposing the petition, the Center said that the evidence on record clearly shows that even after being banned since September 2001, SIMI activists have been compiling, holding meetings, conspiring, barring a brief period in between, have been collecting arms, ammunition, and indulging in disruptive activities. They are going to put India's sovereignty and territorial integrity at risk. They are in regular touch with their colleagues and mentors in other countries. Their acts are going to disrupt peace and communal harmony in the country. Their declared spiders are against the law of our country. Especially their objective of establishing Islamic rule in India cannot be allowed under any circumstances.
