New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre on Monday told the country's largest court that the entire eligible population will be immunized by the end of 2021. During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the Central government as to why the states were left in limbo over the purchase of corona virus vaccine.
The apex court asked, "The Government of India has to buy corona vaccine, why is there a difference in the price of the vaccine?" The apex court said there should be a price for the vaccine across the country. At the same time, the apex court asked several questions to the Centre on procurement of vaccines and mandatory registration on the CoWIN app. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and L Nageshwar Rao, headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud, was hearing an suo motu cognizance case relating to supply of essential medicines, vaccines and oxygen to corona virus patients.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court referred to the fact that states are in the process of issuing global tenders for the COVID-19 vaccine themselves. The bench had questioned the Central government as to why the states were left in such limbo.
