Central govt bans 67 porn websites, action taken under new IT rules

New Delhi: The Modi government has issued a decree to internet service providers to block 67 websites for violating the new Information Technology (IT) rules issued in 2021. In an email sent to internet service providers, the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has asked companies to block 63 websites based on a Pune court order, while four websites are based on Uttarakhand High Court order and directions issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

In the order issued by the DoT on September 24, it has been said that, read with Rule-3(2)(b) of the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules-2021 (Uttarakhand) In pursuance of the said order of the High Court and in view of certain obscene material on the website mentioned below, which outraged the modesty of women, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued an order to block these websites/URLs immediately.

Under the new IT rules enacted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in 2021, it is mandatory for companies to block or disable access to content transmitted, stored or published by them that "shows a person wholly or partially naked or shows him to be involved in sexual acts or conduct". Under the new IT rules, it is also mandatory for companies to block content that is allegedly impersonated or artificially adapted.
