Govt's big decision on Zakir Naik, ban on 'Islamic Research Foundation' extended by 5 years

New Delhi: The Central government on Monday extended the ban on the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) led by controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for five years. Naik is currently living in Malaysia. State that IRF was first declared an illegal organization by the Central Government on 17 November 2016 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967).

The Union Home Ministry said in a notification that IRF is involved in activities that are detrimental to the security of the country and which threaten to disturb the peace and communal harmony and disturb the secularism of the country. The Home Ministry also said that Naik's statements and speeches are objectionable and subversive and through him, he is creating enmity and hatred among religious groups. Naik is inciting youth from a particular community in India and abroad to commit terrorist acts.

The Home Ministry said Naik makes radical statements and speeches to millions of people around the world through international satellite TV networks, internet, print and social media. The Home Ministry said that in view of all these aspects, it has decided to extend the ban on IRF under UAPA for another five years.
