New Delhi: The Central Government has given additional time of three months to the sugar mills to fulfill the mandatory export of the prescribed sugar quota for the current year. Giving information on Monday, a senior Food Ministry official stated that after this step of the government, sugar mills will be able to export their prescribed quota by December 2020. For the 2019-20 sugar marketing year (October to September), the government had approved the export of 6 million tonnes of sugar under quota, so that the surplus sugar produced in the country could be exported.

Food Ministry's Joint Secretary Subodh Kumar Singh has said that out of 6 million tonnes of sugar, 57 lakh tonnes of sugar have been traded. He said that the mills have transported 56 lakh tonnes of sugar to the destination through the port. He said that during the current coronavirus epidemic some mills have faced challenges in exports. Due to the ban on transportation in some states, these mills have not been able to get out of their stock mills.

Singh further said that most mills have faced logistic challenges due to the epidemic. Therefore, we have decided to give them additional grace to meet their export quota. Therefore, the government has extended the export period by three months to December. Sugar mills export sugar to countries like Iran, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
