Kolkata: There has been a constant demand for a separate state in West Bengal, but the Union Home Ministry has made it clear that the Centre will not take any steps in the matter until the respective state assembly passes a resolution for state bifurcation. Greater Behar People's Association leader Ananta Roy (Maharaj) has said several times recently that Behar will be made a Union Territory very soon. He claimed that PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have assured him of this.

In fact, it is being repeatedly said by a section of local BJP leaders that North Bengal should be a separate state. However, recently, the party's state president Sukanta Majumdar has said many times that there has been no talk about the division of the state so far. In this context, central BJP leaders are saying that the party is in favour of smaller states, but the party that favours action on the question of partition of Bengal is looking at what the leadership of that state and above all its people want. With the home ministry and the BJP high command disclosing the issue of bifurcation of the state, political circles are watching what Ananth Rai and local BJP leaders say.

Recently, the Kamtapuri Progressive Party had written to the central government demanding the status of a recognised language under the Eighth Schedule and the formation of a state of Kamtapuri, but the Home Ministry rejected the claim of Kamtapuri language and sent it to the Center-State Department to see the state's claim. According to sources, the demand for such a state share is regularly submitted to the Centre, but when the proposal for state bifurcation is passed by the respective state legislatures and comes to the Centre, the matter picks up pace. In this case, no such proposal was presented by the West Bengal government. So far, the stated position of the Trinamool high command is against the division of West Bengal.
