Meghalaya's Home (Jails) Department will shortly provide a master plan for the establishment of a Central Jail in the state.

"We are constructing a Central Jail on 25 acres of land in the New Shillong Township that has been granted to us. We'll be releasing a master plan on this in the near future "M Kharkrang, the Inspector General of Prisons, stated. Meghalaya, unlike other states, has a central jail where only prisoners are housed.

Kharkrang further admitted that the goal of constructing a Central Jail is to separate criminals from those awaiting trial (UTPs). It's also part of a long-term plan to reduce overcrowding in the state's many district jails, he said.

When asked, the Inspector General stated that construction would begin only if the master plan was authorised, and that such infrastructure would take a long time to build.
