NEW DELHI:  The Central government has moved the Supreme Court to overturn a decision by the Tripura High Court to hear a PIL challenging the security protections provided to Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, and his family. A representative of the home ministry was requested to appear before the high court.

The Solicitor General raised the issue before a vacation bench made up of Justices Surya Kant and J.B. Pardiwala, criticising the Tripura High Court's decision to consider a PIL contesting the security provided to Mukesh Ambani and his family by the Maharashtra government following the Center's assessment of the threat.

Mehta stated in his submission, "We informed the high court that the Bombay High Court had dismissed a similar case. The high court lacked authority to hear the PIL, he continued, and the security provided to the Ambanis had nothing to do with the Tripura government.

Mehta claimed that the high court also asked an official from the Union Home Ministry to appear in the case with documents pertaining to threat perception. Mehta was asked by the bench if the order was a final one or an interim one. It was an interim order, he retorted.
