NEW DELHI: Centralgovernmentt holds review meeting on 12 percent ethanol blending with petrol for 2022-23
The Union government mulls achieving 12 percent ethanol blending with petrol, for which top officials from the food and public distribution as well as petroleum ministries held a meeting on Monday to review the progress of the target.

The conference also attended the chairman of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), as well as secretaries from the oil marketing firms and ministries.

The ethanol industry showed optimism to supply an adequate quantity of ethanol to meet the targets, sources said.
Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, or alcohol is a biofuel. It is naturally made by the fermentation of sugar. It is mostly produced in India during the sugarcane extraction process. However, it can also be produced using other organic materials, such as grains of food.

In India, ethanol is largely derived while extracting sugar from sugarcane. However, other organic matter such as food grains can also be used for its production.

The government has started the Ethanol Blended Petrol programme to mix this biofuel with petrol to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel.
