Amaravati: N. Chandrababu Naidu, the national president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), requested Director General of Police Gautam Sawang on Tuesday to take harsh punishment against those responsible for the horrific attack on his party leaders in the Kuppam Assembly segment in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district.

Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Naidu, in a letter to the DGP, emphasised the importance of preserving law and order in order to restore the public's faith in democracy. He said that the ruling YSR Congress Party's (YSRCP) thugs are targeting opposition TDP leaders, but that the police have taken no action.

The opposition leader told the DGP: "The YSRCP's henchmen carried out such heinous attacks solely to prevent TDP leaders from addressing illegal mining issues. These attacks have not only obliterated constitutionally protected fundamental rights, but they have also tarnished our democracy." Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the TDP held rallies across the state, demanding that the YSRCP administration lower the pricing of basic necessities.
