Chennai: Election Commission seized 35 kg gold, 83kg silver, ₹62 lakh cash in one day

CHENNAI: Police accompanying election commission staff and NIB-CID sleuths on Friday conducted surprise checks in separate places in the city leading to the seizure of about 35 kg of gold jewelry and 83kg of silver and recovery of 62 lakh unaccounted cash being smuggled by a man on an Omnibus.

A special cell has been set up under the Additional Commissioner of Police (North), R. Dhinakaran, the designated nodal officer, to implement various instructions of the Election Commission (EC) and coordinate security arrangements for campaigning, deployment of personnel to flying squads and surveillance teams in six Lok Sabha constituencies which come under the limits of the Chennai city police. The police said the personnel attached to the flying squad team intercepted a car on Waltax Road on Friday morning and on inspection, they seized 6.28kg of gold jewelry and bars.

Election squad officials seized 75 silk sarees from a man at Sholinganallur. A police team examined a car near Thiruneermalai and recovered 27kg of gold bars and jewelry. Inquires revealed that the vehicle was coming from a leading jewelry showroom in T Nagar when the election squad officials seize the valuables. Police said in all these incidents, they didn't get proper documentation. All the seized items were handed over to election squad officials, who, in turn, sent them to the treasury office in the city.
