Chennai: The Madras High Court has said that the Tamil Nadu government should work with organisations that are interested in conserving reservoirs. The court's remarks came in the wake of the ongoing water crisis in many parts of the state. The High Court has also asked the state government not to stop protests to highlight the water crisis in the state.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh has directed the Chennai Police Commissioner on Friday to allow the NGO Aapur Iykam to hold a demonstration at Valluvarkottam on June 30 over the current water crisis in the metropolis. The Justice said that the issue that is being raised during the demonstration is a burning issue that people must know. The government is taking all possible steps to ensure that water is supplied to every corner of the metropolis.
He said, "However, it is important to realize how we reached this situation because many reservoirs were encroached earlier, which actually destroyed the ecosystem. He said the issue needs to be seriously considered and awareness should be spread throughout the province and NGOs are the leaders."
