Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has given permission to open liquor shops in Chennai once again after about 5 months. Recently the government has said that after a gap of about five months, the state-run TASMAC retail liquor shops are ready to reopen in Chennai and suburban areas from Tuesday, August 18. Liquor shops will remain open from 10 am to 7 pm. There are reports of only 500 tokens being issued to consumers per day. In a government release quoting Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation talked about this.

India is the only retailer of foreign liquor manufactured in the state. This release issued also stated, "all the people coming to the liquor shops will inevitably have to wear face masks and maintain social distance." Apart from this, it has also been said, 'shops located in the Containment Zone and Malls will not be opened'. The announcement about this has also been made at a time when a decline in the cases of coronavirus is being filed in the state capital.

TASMAC shops were closed in Chennai as well as entire Tamil Nadu on the evening of 24 March, when a complete nationwide lockdown was imposed for the first time. 1,196 new cases have been reported in Chennai on Sunday and the number of infected people has increased to 1.16 lakh.
