CHENNAI: In the latest matrimonial scam, a 39-year-old man lost 21.00 lakh over the course of 5 months. He reportedly wired the money through G-pay, telling his potential "wife" that her mother was receiving medical treatment.

Police said to have hidden the identity of the victimised man. Dhatathri Sreenivasan (47), a Salem resident who defrauded the man while posing as a prospective bride, was detained by the police.

The father of the 39-year-old man registered his son's identity in a matrimonial site since he was getting older, said Nungambakkam police.

The accused Datathri Sreenivasan contacted him through the site in the form of a woman and shared 'her' phone number with the 39-year-old man.

The 39-year-old male made an immediate transfer of funds to the joint account. The prospective groom lost Rs 21 lakh from his account over the course of five months.\

Even after spending this much money, the prospective "bride" continued to demand more money before calling the police. Following an inquiry, the police found that Datathri Sreenivas, a guy acting as a woman, had duped the 39-year-old. He was taken into jail on Tuesday night after being detained, and he was later brought before a judge and remanded.
