Chennai: Our body naturally has two kidneys, but recently when a person came out of the hospital after a kidney transplant, he had five kidneys in his body. This was his third transplant. Doctors expect this third transplant to be successful, and if successful, the option will open up for patients who have not succeeded in the previous two transplants.

The same patient was reported by doctors when he was just 14 years old in 1994 and both his kidneys had failed. So his first transplant took place which lasted only 9 years. The second transplant took place in 2005, which also lasted only for the next 12 years. But for the next four years, this patient had to undergo dialysis three per week.

Transplant surgeon Dr. S Sarvanan had said that his first and second transplants had failed due to uncontrolled hypertension. This was followed by triple bypass surgery in March this year to remove the heart bleeds. This made the situation more serious. The only better option the doctors had was to have another kidney transplant. But it was no longer so simple. First, the patient had two kidneys in his body that had already been damaged. Apart from these, there was two donor kidney. Now for the fifth, the doctors had to make a place in his body.
