Chennai’s 2nd airport to cost Rs. 20,000 cr: CM Stalin

TAMIL NADU: Chennai will have a greenfield airport at Parandur at an estimated project cost of Rs. 20,000 crore and the existing airport at Meenambakkam and the new one at Parandur will function concurrently, said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in a press statement issued on Tuesday, August 2.

The Chief Minister said, the new airport in Parandur will have terminals that can accommodate 10 crore passengers annually, two runways, taxiways, an apron, cargo, and a number of other facilities. The ultimate cost will be determined following the creation of a thorough project report, as per press release statement.

The site clearance will be submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in accordance with the Center's Guidelines for Greenfield Airports. The State will start taking other actions, like acquiring land and creating a thorough project study, after it receives their consent. The State will then request "in-principle" permission for this initiative from the Center.


Based on the Central government’s Guidelines of Greenfield Airports, the site clearance will be submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. After getting approval from them, the State will step ahead to begin other measures such as land acquisition and preparation of a  detailed project report (DPR). Following this, the State will approach the Centre for the 'in-principle' approval for this project.
