Controversy over caste reservation in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: The Government of Chhattisgarh had increased the reservation by 13 per cent. While the OBCs are happy, a large section of the Scheduled Castes are not happy with the increase of just one per cent. Their demand is to reduce reservation to 16 per cent like undivided Madhya Pradesh. The government has announced 13 per cent reservation to the Scheduled Castes. Leaders of political parties are raising their voices on this demand of the society.

The BJP and the Janata Congress are demanding 16 per cent reservation to the Scheduled Castes as promised by the Chhattisgarh government. Both parties argue that the Congress had promised 16 per cent in its 2013 election manifesto. The general category is calling the change in reservation as a political way to divide the society for political gain. The Chief of the Chhattisgarh Scheduled Caste Reservation Bachao Maha Committee KP Khande has welcomed the government's decision.

He said, 16 per cent reservation is being demanded by those who had reduced the SC quota. We are satisfied with 13 per cent reservation in terms of population. He also said that the census does not have the exact number of SCs. Avoiding giving a direct answer to the question of withdrawal of the case filed in the High Court on reservation, he only said that he would seek the opinion of the lawyer. BJP accuses government of misleading it.
