Mahasamund: A unique case of installing a statue of Gajraj (Elephant) to save crops from elephants has come to light in a village under Mahasamund district in Chhattisgarh. Local people hope that this new method will prove to be effective to prevent the loss of crops. The farmers of Kukradih village in the district have told that they have installed the statue of Gajraj while praying to Lord Ganesha.

Villagers are confident that Gajraj will definitely protect their crop and village from herds of elephants. Talking to the media, Forest Officer Mayank Pandey has said about this matter that the forest department respects the trust of the villagers. Our priority is to ensure that crops are not wasted. Actually, the farmers of Mahasamund area have been worried about the terror of elephants for many years. Last Tuesday, elephants had returned from Gomarda Sanctuary completely destroying eight acres of paddy crop of farmers of Kharniabahal and about 11 acres of 13 farmers of village Kalenda on Monday.

About 35 acres of farmers' crops have been destroyed due to elephants in the area. However, till now no news of any loss of life has been reported. After about three to four days, there is an atmosphere of fear among farmers due to elephants coming back to this area again.
