Beijing: Once again, news of China's atrocities on the Muslim community has come to light. An Australian think tank said the latest report of widespread human rights abuses in the restive region has indicated that Chinese authorities have demolished thousands of mosques in Xinjiang.

Rights groups say more than one million Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim Turk-speaking people have been pressured to abandon their traditional and religious activities in camps in the north-western region. According to an Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) report based on satellite depictions of hundreds of religious sites and statistical modelling, 16,000 mosques were destroyed or damaged.

The report says that in the last three years, China has carried out this movement and an estimated 8,500 mosques have been completely destroyed. The report says that there has been a huge loss outside the urban centres of Urumqi and Kashgar. Many mosques were demolished, their domes and minarets were toppled. Earlier, a report claimed that China has imprisoned 80 lakh Uighur Muslims.
