New Delhi: China's army is developing integrated model villages on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) which are actually an extension of the military cantonment. These villages are being set up to ensure that the military and civilian population can be inhabited along the border. However, it seems that at present, there is no civilian population in this area and they are still lying vacant.

An official has stated that 'it can be used by both civilians and the military and is being done to further strengthen its claim to the land in the event of an extension. Surveillance towers remain at these places and these areas are under the strict supervision of the People's Liberation Army of China. About two dozen such integrated villages have been established across the Line of Actual Control. Most of these are in the Eastern sector opposite Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

Army sources have said, 'It is a relatively new concept, but it is not yet clear what is the idea behind doing so as these villages are near the Line of Control and fall in the visual range.' Although there are no plans to resettle people along the Indian border along the Line of Control, India is opening some of these areas to tourists.
