BEIJING – According to emergency officials, a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 carrying 132 people crashed on Monday in a mountainous part of the country's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Flight MU5735 took off at 1.11 p.m. (local time) from Kunming and was expected to arrive in Guangzhou at 3.05 p.m. According to Guangxi's regional emergency management department, the crash occurred on a mountain in Tengxian County, resulting in a massive fire, according to Xinhua.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said, 123 of the 132 persons were passengers and nine were crew members. According to the CAAC, the emergency response mechanism has been activated, and a working team has been despatched to the scene.
The number of those killed was not immediately known. China Eastern has yet to publish a statement regarding the tragedy. According to flight tracking systems, the jet was in the air for slightly over an hour, as per the BBC. Flight MU5735 was last sourced at 2.22 p.m., at a height of 3,225 ft., according to FlightRadar24 data.
State media in China has released video footage of plane debris, a big conflagration, and smoke pouring from the accident scene. The most recent big aviation catastrophe in China occurred in August 2010, when a Harbin-bound jet crashed in Yichun, killing 42 passengers.
