China unit has targeted Indian companies through cyber means. The cyber threat intelligence company on Thursday said a unit of Chinese cyber soldiers has preyed on India's telecom companies, government agencies and several defence contractors. Earlier also, it was reported that China had launched cyber attacks in India's infrastructure sector. It has been learnt that this new operation is being carried out to gather military information.
According to the report, Insikt Group of a company called Recorded Future has found that the suspected Chinese group is making several Indian institutions its hub in 2020 and 2021. The name of this group is said to be RedFoxtrot. Earlier, the company had reported that China was targeting India's key infrastructure and port sector in the energy sector. The group was identified as RedEcho at that time. The company is headquartered in the US.
"Especially in India, we have identified a group that has successfully targeted two telecom institutions, three defence contractors and several additional government and private sector institutions in the last six months," a man from the recorded future Insikt Group told the media. "In particular, these activities took place when there was a lot of tension between India and China," a Insikt representative told the media. It has been said that the affected companies have been informed about it.
According to the report, Future, recorded in a blog post, said the receipts were based on analysis of network traffic, mailware footprints used by attackers, domain registration records and data transmitting. "We believe that the RedFoxtrot is conducting cyber espionage operations to get military and security information based on sustained targeting of institutions in the region," the report quoted the company's representative as saying.
According to the report, analysis of the recorded future revealed that the strings of RedFoxtrot are included in unit 69010 of the People's Liberation Army. According to the information received, its headquarters may be at Urumki in Shinjiyan. In March 2021, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-IN) said that they had received indications that cyber people associated with China had launched a spying operation against the Indian transport sector.
