Scientists have been warning for a long time that the sea level on the earth is increasing rapidly. Due to the increase in the water level, small islands and many countries can also face disaster. At present, some reports say that China is also sinking fast. In the last year, i.e., 2022, China's coastal sea level has reached a record level. Since it was first measured in 1980, the water level has risen by an average of 3.5 mm every year.

Wang Hua, head of the Marine Forecasting and Monitoring Section at China's Ministry of Natural Resources, says sea level last year was 94 mm higher than the 1993-2011 average and is rising faster than the global rate. He told a press conference that in the past 11 years, from 2012 to 2022, China's coastal sea level was the highest since it was first recorded. Wang did not provide any comparative figures, but last year's average sea level rise of 94 mm was 10 mm more than in 2021. He also said that due to global warming, the temperature of China's coastal waters is increasing rapidly, which is why the sea level has increased.

In an annual report published in May last year, China attributed the above-average rise in sea level to the melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, along with rising water temperatures. In this report, it was also warned that the rise in sea level can have long-term effects. This has also been linked to disturbance of coastal ecosystems, loss of tidal flats, and increased risk of flooding and salt tides in coastal cities.

Reports say that about 45% of China's population of about 140 million and more than half of the country's economic output come from the coastal areas. Many important cities, including Shanghai, are situated on the coast of China. Shanghai is the most developed and richest city in the country. Recently, NASA has also made an assessment that shows that the sea level has increased by more than 9 centimetres in just 30 years. Since 1993, there has been a total rise of 9.1 cm in the sea. Two years ago, it had increased by 0.27 cm.

Some time ago, in the report of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), it was also stated that if the sea level in the world continued to rise like this, then the big cities of the world would drown. In these cities, the crisis is increasing for cities like Mumbai, Shanghai, Dhaka, Bangkok, Jakarta, Maputo, Lagos, Cairo, London, Copenhagen, New York, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, and Santiago.
