China resumes rice import from India after 2 years

New Delhi: China has started importing Indian rice after a gap of two years. This move of China is being seen to improve its bitter relations with India. The neighbouring country has ordered an import of 5,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice after Indian exporters offered a competitive price compared to other countries.

All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) has given information in this regard. India is the major exporter of rice in the world, while China is the largest importer. In the year 2006, China was granted market access to Indian rice, but imports from it could be done only during the financial year 2017-18. China is buying rice from India at a time when there is tension on the border between the two countries.

AIRIA Executive Director Vinod Kaul said that although market access was granted in the year 2006, China imported about 974 tonnes of non-basmati rice in FY 2017-18. Now after a gap of two years, we have started inquiries for import.
