China's Hualong one nuclear reactor begins operations

Communist ruling China's National Nuclear Corp. has announced its first nuclear power unit that uses Hualong One, a third-generation nuclear reactor, started commercial operations on Saturday. Nuclear reactor which is located in the city of Fuqing in southeastern Fujian province of China, was designed to have a 60-year lifespan, with its core equipment domestically produced. 

Each unit of the Hualong No. 1 has a capacity of 1.161 million kilowatts, with this an annual domestic electricity demand of 1 million people in moderately developed countries can be meet, according to China National Nuclear Corp, or CNNC. CNNC President Yu Jianfeng said, “With Hualong One online, China is now at the forefront of third-generation nuclear technology in the world, alongside countries like the United States, France and Russia". President added the commercial use of Hualong One will reduce carbon emissions and help achieve China's low-carbon goals such as carbon neutrality before 2060. A second Hualong One unit is due to be completed later this year. 

Construction of two demonstration Hualong One (HPR1000) units is in process at China General Nuclear's Fangchenggang plant in the Guangxi Autonomous Region. These units are expected to start up in 2022. CNNC has also started working on two Hualong units at the Zhangzhou plant in Fujian province, plus the first of two units at Taipingling in Guangdong.
