Los Angeles The Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Kris Wu was given a 13-year prison term on Friday by a Chinese court.

He was found guilty of both group licentiousness and rape. He will be deported after serving his term, the judge pronounced. According to reports, Wu was detained and officially charged in August of last year. In a court without media access, his case was heard in June.

A 18-year-old influencer in the cosmetics industry named Du Meizhu made accusations against Wu in July 2021. The lady accused the musician and actor on social media of raping her on a date when she was just 17 and intoxicated.

Du later charged him with doing the same to two minors and other young women. (The legal consent age in China is 14) At the time, Wu disputed the accusations, and the police initially seemed to support the celebrity. Two weeks later, however, the Chaoyang District People's Procurator in Beijing made a public announcement announcing that it had authorised Wu's arrest "after inquiry in line with the law." The typical sentence for rape in China is three to ten years in jail, but in very severe cases, the sentence may be life in prison or even the death penalty. Sexual activity involving three or more people who are older than 16 is referred to as group licentiousness, which carries a maximum five-year prison term.

As per media sour at the time of the trial in June, Wu faced a possible sentence of three to ten years in prison. The reason that the sentence is longer 13 years may be due to aggravating circumstances or a court determination to make a public figure an example.

It appears that the June hearing was held in secret to preserve the victim's identity. It also sought to divert public and media attention from one of the biggest superstars in the nation's trial.

Although Wu was born in China, he is a Canadian citizen. Before concentrating on his career in China, he first gained notoriety as a member of the Chinese-language version of the Korean boyband EXO.

The rapper established himself on television as a judge and mentor on programmes like "The Rap of China." He agreed to an exclusive distribution contract with Universal Music in 2018.
