Ingredients

1 cup butter at room temperature, plus more for greasing the pan

3 cups all-purpose flour

½ cup cocoa

½ cup vegetable shortening

3 cups sugar

5 large eggs, room temperature

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa together. Set aside.

3. Now with the help of an electric mixer, cream the 1 cup butter, the shortening and the sugar until fluffy.

4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

5. Keep the mixer running, add the flour mixture and the milk alternately, beginning and ending with the flour.

6. Add the vanilla essence.

7. Pour the batter into the greased pan and bake for 1 hour. Check the cake inserting a toothpick; it should come out clean.

8. Cool the cake in the pan for 30 minutes before turning it out. Slice the cake and serve topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or melting chocolate sauce.
