Civic body to launch Zero Waste Project is to be launched to make Chennai garbage free

Chennai: In order to tackle the waste, The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) came toegther and has signed a memorandum of understanding to begin the Chennai's Zero Waste Project.

This Zero Waste Project is a first-of-its-kind-initiative which will be implemented in the city.

According to the report,  the programme aims to cover all 15 zones of the city which comprise of wards in total and the initiative has been taken after the success of the pilot which was implemented in Ward 100, Anna Nagar earlier this month. 

As per a report in the Indian Express,a researcher at the CAG, Vamsi Shankar Kapilavai said that there is an emphasis for waste management in Chennai since the two landfills of the city are currently being managed by the GCC, which have reached their maximum capacity, following which the idea of Zero Waste Chennai was conceived.

He further added that there are very few cities in India which have a decentralised waste management system and with this MoU, Chennai has joined the ranks. 

The waste management in a decentralized way involves dividing the waste management system into sub-systems among the 15 zones of the city.
