New Delhi: The CBI is often a target of opponents over its functioning. The Opposition often sees it as an important weapon of the ruling party, which is used to suppress opponents of the government. The Supreme Court had termed it as a caged parrot. At present, it is again floating in Fiji.

This is because Supreme Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, at a function on Tuesday, questioned why the CBI does a good job when there is no political color in a case. Justice Gogoi spoke candidly about the agency's shortcomings and strengths in the 18th edition of the DP Kohli Memorial Lecture, which was held after a gap of two years and advised him to move forward.

He said, it is true that in many high-profile and sensitive cases, the agency has not been able to meet the standards of judicial investigation. It is equally true that these kinds of flaws may not happen occasionally. Justice Gogoi pointed out that such cases highlight the difficulties of the system and point to a deep lack of coordination between institutional aspirations, organizational structure, working culture, and governing politics.

He said, why is it that when there is no political color in a case, the CBI does a good job. On the contrary, Vineet Narayan vs. Union of India case came to light, in which the Supreme Court laid down clear guidelines to protect the integrity of the agency. The credibility of the CBI has come under question.
