Closing Bell: Sensex Surges 696-pts Nifty Above 17,750, Banking Stocks Rise

New Delhi, India: On Wednesday, domestic market indices rose for the third day in a row, led by gains in financial and banking stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 696 points, or 1.18 percent, to close at 59,558 points, while the wider NSE Nifty rose 203 points, or 1.16 percent, to 17,780 points.

Mid- and small-cap stocks finished higher, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index up 1.18 percent and small-cap stocks up 1.44 percent.

The highest Nifty gainer was Bajaj Finance, which rose 4.98 percent to 16,696.05. Among the gainers were IndusInd Bank, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance, and HDFC Life. The Nifty PSU Bank index outpaced the index by 3.41 percent. Tech Mahindra, UltraTech Cements, Britannia Cement, Shree Cement, and Nestle India, on the other hand, were among the losers.

IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finserv, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Axis Bank saw the most gains on the BSE Sensex, with their shares gaining as much as 5.57 percent.
