Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced that the amount of financial assistance given to poor girls under Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana will be increased from Rs 49 thousand to Rs 51 thousand. CM Chouhan made this announcement during a program organized in Sonkach town of Dewas district. Elections to the 230-member assembly in Madhya Pradesh are due by the end of this year. The ruling BJP is trying to retain power, while the opposition Congress is trying to return to power.
CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, "We have tried to end the injustice done to the daughters in the society by running several welfare schemes." Under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana, an amount of Rs 49 thousand is being given for the marriage of girls belonging to poor sections of the society. It has now been increased to Rs 51 thousand. He also said that under the ambitious 'Ladli Bahna Yojana' launched in March this year, Rs 1,000 will be deposited every month in the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries from June 10. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath has announced that his party, if voted to power, will provide Rs 1,500 per month to poor women. Referring to his government's main scheme 'Ladli Laxmi Yojana', CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that 44.90 lakh daughters have become 'millionaires' through this scheme.
Under this scheme, at the time of birth of the girl, a certificate is issued assuring payment of Rs 1.18 lakh in her name and the amount is paid till the girl turns 21 after passing various levels of education. An official said that Ladli Laxmi Yojana was started in the state in 2007 and it has been followed by 6 states of the country - Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Goa. Further, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that in order to empower women, his government has made a provision of 50 percent reservation for them in local body elections and has reserved posts for them in the recruitment of teachers and police constables. “We have also waived off the stamp duty to be paid for property registration to empower them."
