CHENNAI: Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu's industrial and commercial capital, is fast becoming the state's Covid hotspot, with a positive rate of 26.6 percent.

Coimbatore District Collector G.S. Sameeran issued a statement on Monday urging residents to follow Covid guidelines to prevent the spread of the infection. Sameeran further asked individuals who have not yet received the vaccine, as well as those who are eligible for the second dosage, to do so as soon as possible.

ESI Hospital, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, and other taluk level hospitals, he said, provide vaccination services around the clock. The District Collector further stated that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had seen an increase long before Coimbatore, and that the number of Covid cases in GCC is presently decreasing.

Due to an increase in Covid-19 cases and the formation of clusters, Coimbatore's industrial zones, including Sullur and Pollachi, have been temporarily shut down.

Coimbatore is the business capital of Tamil Nadu, with a thriving industry base that includes machine tools, spare parts, textiles, and other industries and businesses. People from Tamil Nadu and Kerala throng the city for shopping, prompting the government to demand for increased vigilance to prevent the sickness from spreading further.
