State media reported on Tuesday that North Korea will issue commemorative coins to honour the upcoming birth anniversary of its late leader, Kim Jong-il, in an effort to create a joyful mood for the national holiday. According to media sources, the Supreme People's Assembly's standing committee agreed to issue gold and silver coins to commemorate the 80th birthday of Kim Jong-il, the father of current leader Kim Jong-un, which falls on Wednesday this year.

According to media reports, one side of the coins features a picture of the former leader, while the other side has an image of what the North says is his birthplace, which is located at the foot of Mount Paekdu, the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula.

The action comes as the North prepares for a number of anniversary events, including a large-scale military parade, which is being watched closely. On the occasion of significant anniversaries and events, the North has often released commemorative coins.
