Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien has invited controversial comedian Vir Das to perform in Kolkata. In fact, a day earlier, Vir Das's program in Bengaluru was cancelled at the same time after protests by Hindu organizations. The protesters had alleged that the event on Thursday would hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. Now TMC Rajya Sabha MP Brian tweeted on Friday, "Hello Vir Das! Come to Kolkata. We'd love to call you here this winter. Please send me a private message. Let's do it.''

Vir Das later tried to clarify by releasing a video on Twitter. Das tweeted, "I made this video after one of my shows. I have no interest in being used in the prism of the media or for discussions. I am an artist. I shouldn't be in the news. Many assumptions are made regarding my content. I believe in my art and audience.''

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti welcomed the cancellation of controversial comedian Vir Das's show. The committee's spokesperson Mohan Gowda had said that Das has insulted India, the women of the country and Hinduism. Gowda further said "We had lodged a complaint against the show at Vyalikaval police station. The show has been cancelled due to the agitation by Hindu organisations. Wherever such people insult Hinduism in the name of comedy, they should be boycotted.''
