CHENNAI: MDMK leader and Member of Parliament Vaiko, who is a coalition partner of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, announced on March 31 that the party would hold protest marches across the state on April 7 against the Common University Entrance Tests for admission to Central universities.

Vaiko stated in a statement released on Thursday that the Common University Entrance Tests (CUET) is an attempt by the Union administration to devalue students' school grades and the state board curriculum. He said that this would deprive kids from low-income and marginalised communities in the state of opportunities.

Notably, the UGC has announced that Class XII board examination marks would be given no weightage and that admissions to Undergraduate programmes in Central Universities will be purely dependent on the CUET. Several Tamil organisations, including the VCK, NTK, DMDK, and Vaiko's MDMK, have expressed their displeasure with this. The ruling DMK has also expressed strong opposition to the CUET.

The Tamil Nadu political parties reject the National Entrance Cumulative Eligibility Test (NEET) for medical school admissions, and the state Assembly has already voted two unanimous resolutions against it.
