New Delhi: On Tuesday, Congress’ social media head Divya Spandana mocked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Spandana questioned Jaitley why she was charged with sedition after she had posted a meme mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, granted bail to BJP activist Priyanka Sharma who had been arrested by WB police for allegedly sharing a morphed image of TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The court had initially asked Priyanka Sharma to apologize to the West Bengal CM upon her release, but later amended the order to indicate that she was to be released immediately "without any condition."

Reacting to the development, Union Minister Arun Jaitley took to Twitter to suggest that Mamata Banerjee’s rule was dictatorial, and noted humor, wit and sarcasm "have no place in autocracies."

He said in his tweet, “Humour, wit, sarcasm survive in a free society. They have no place in autocracies. Dictators laugh at people. They don’t like people laughing at them. Bengal, today is a case in point.”

Responding to Jaitley’s tweet, Spandana said, “Jaitley ji, I agree with you but how come I was charged with sedition for this meme on Modi? Are you saying Modi is a dictator?” In the meme shared by Spandana, Modi can be seen standing next to his wax statue which has “chor” or “thief” written on its forehead.

In the meantime, Priyanka Sharma had shared a meme on May 9, in which Mamata Banerjee's face was superimposed on a picture of actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas at MET Gala 2019.  The BJP leader was arrested on Friday and was sent to 14-days judicial custody.
