New Delhi: A Delhi court has acquitted 11 accused, including Sharjeel Imam, in the Jamia violence case. Senior Congress leader and former Home Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday said that the criminal justice system that tolerates pre-trial imprisonment is an insult to the Constitution. Chidambaram has urged the apex court to put an end to the "daily abuse of law".  

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Saturday discharged 11 people, including former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students  Sharjeel Imam, Asif Iqbal Tanha and Safoora Zargar, in the 2019 Jamia violence case. The court said in this case that the police had made them "scapegoats". "Dissent should not be encouraged to be suppressed," the Congress leader tweeted and asked, "There is prima facie evidence against the accused." Some of the accused have been in jail for nearly three years. Some have got bail after several months. It is pre-trial incarceration."

P Chidambaram tweeted one after the other that, 'Incompetent police and overzealous prosecutors are responsible for keeping citizens in jail before the case. What action will be taken against them?' The Congress leader has asked, 'Who will refund the months or years spent by the accused in jail?' Congress leader Chidambaram said, 'Our criminal justice system tolerates pre-trial imprisonment, this is a contempt of Articles 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution. The apex court should put an end to this daily misuse of law, the sooner the better.'

In the anti-CAA program, Sharjeel had said that 'the time has come for us to tell non-Muslims that if they are our sympathizers, then they should come and stand on our terms. If they do not stand on our terms then they are not our sympathizers. If 5 lakh people are organized with us, then we can separate the Northeast from India permanently. If not permanently, then at least for a one-half month, Assam can be cut off from India. Put so much pus on the tracks, on the road that it takes a month to remove them.
