NEW DELHI: Congress veteran and Rajya Sabha member Motilal Vora today raised the issue of cutting salaries of ISRO scientists in the Rajya Sabha on July 30. He said that while the entire country is congratulating is on the success of ISRO scientists after the successful launch of Chandrayaan-2, the Indian government is cutting their salaries.

Indeed, two additional increments for ISRO scientists were approved by the president, to inspire the best talents in the country to become ISRO scientists. Scientists at ISRO could also be encouraged. Motilal Vora said this additional increment was implemented by the Department of Space in 1996 following a Supreme Court order. The apex court in its order had said that the increment should be treated as "payroll" in a manner. Motilal Vora appealed to the Rajya Sabha that the Central government should not deduct the salaries of ISRO scientists.

The Indian government had cut the salaries of ISRO scientists just before the launch of Chandrayaan-2. In an order issued on June 12, 2019, the central government said that the incentive grant amount being given to ISRO scientists and engineers in the form of two additional increments since 1996 is being discontinued.
