New Delhi: Manpreet Singh, captain of the Indian men's hockey team, which won a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, supported the Central government's decision to rename the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand on Tuesday (August 10, 2021). He also said that it was great to win a medal after so many years.

Congress did not like the support of the central government's decision by men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh. Manpreet's support for renaming the Khel Ratna Award upset many on social media, including the Congress party's national spokesperson. Dr. Shama Mohammad took to Twitter to say, "Are our male hockey captains unaware of the fact that it was the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, not just the Khel Ratna Award!"

Meanwhile, Congress sympathizer Sumant Raman also expressed his displeasure over Manpreet Singh's statement that he supported PM Narendra Modi's decision to rename the award after Major Dhyan Chand. Pm Modi had announced on August 6, 2021, that from now on the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will be known as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. PM Modi had said that he has received a request from people across the country to name the award after the Indian hockey legend. Therefore, the name has been changed respecting their will.
