New Delhi:  Union Minister Smriti Irani, who has been pitted against the Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, said that people of his constituency have rejected him.

Smriti Irani  took to Twitter and attacked the congress President. Quoting Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s famous poem “Sinhasan Khali Karo ki Janta Ati Hai” Irani tweeted “Sinhasan khali karo Rahul ji ki janta ati hai (Vacate the throne Rahul ji as public is coming).”

The statement of the Union minister came after Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that party president Rahul Gandhi will “positively consider” Kerala’s Wayanad as the second seat after Amethi.

Enhancing  the BJP’’s vote percentage from single digit to impressive 37 per cent of the votes cast in 2014 Irani proved that she had the will and courage to challenge Gandhi. The saffron party reposed faith in Irani by awarding her ticket to contest in the upcoming General elections.

Talking abour Amethi, it  has remained with the Congress since 1967 barring 1977-80 when Janata Party candidate Ravindra Pratap Singh secured victory from the seat. Rahul's father Rajiv Gandhi, uncle Sanjay Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi have represented this seat at different points of time. Rahul Gandhi has represented the seat for the longest period of time (2004 to present).

The only time Congress suffered a defeat from Amethi was when BJP’s Sanjay Singh defeated Rajiv Gandhi's close aide Satish Sharma by a margin of 23,270 votes.

Earlier, former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah urged Rahul Gandhi to contest from Karnataka. Later, another party leader Dinesh Gundu Rao joined the fray and appealed the Congress president to contest from the state.
