Congress MP Shashi Tharoor celebrated Onam along with forty-odd members of his family at his ancestral house at Elavancher, Kerala on Friday.  Tharoor was all cheer as he reached the Mundarath family house after being exonerated by a court in his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death case. Carrying ears of paddy and a lamp, Tharoor entered the house along with other members and led the special puja for agricultural prosperity. The family too shared the joy as they celebrated the festival in a traditional style. Being a celebrity member of the family, Tharoor enjoyed the privilege of leading the pujas done in connection with the festival. After sharing an Onam feast in plantain leaves, the family reminisced their childhood days of celebration. He shared jokes with grandmother Jayasankhini.

Tharoor also put out a separate tweet on Saturday greeted people on the occasion of Onam. In an earlier tweet, Tharoor posted a clip of from a Malayalam news TV channel, which captured him explaining details about the festival and how he used to spend his childhood.

Today, Saturday, August 21, is the main day of Onam - Thiruvonam. Onam is a harvest festival celebrated by Malayalees. The date is based on the Panchangam which falls on the 22nd Nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month Chingam of Malayalam calendar, which in the Gregorian calendar falls between August-September. Chingam is the first month according to the Malayalam calendar.
