NEW DELHI: Raising the issue of the country's growing population in the Upper House of Parliament on Monday, Congress MP Dr. T. Subramami Reddy said that if the problem is not brought under control, the benefits of development will be redundant. During Zero Hour, Reddy raised the issue of increasing population. He said that India will become the most populous country in the world, leaving China behind in the coming years.

Reddy said, if population is not controlled, the economy, employment and resources will be adversely affected. The problem of unemployment, environmental imbalances and migration to cities will increase. In such a case, the benefits of development will become redundant. They have demanded that incentive schemes should be introduced to promote family planning otherwise the population cannot be curbed.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has said that there is a need for in-depth consultations on such issues. Members from various parties expressed their agreeance with the issue. On the other hand, in the Zero Hour, CPM member K K Ragesh raised the issue of privatization of six airports in the country and demanded the government to reconsider the decision. Apart from this, the issue of triple talaq was also discussed.
