NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to defend his party amid the controversy over his alleged remark that the Congress is a 'party of Muslims',.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said that the religion, caste or beliefs of people matter minute to the grand old party.

"I stand with the last person in the line. The exploited, marginalised and the persecuted. Their religion, caste or beliefs matter little to me. I seek out those in pain and embrace them. I erase hatred and fear. I love all living beings. I am the Congress,"  Rahul Gandhi wrote on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

 Worth mention here An Urdu daily had reported that the Congress president who met Muslim intellectuals asserted them that the Congress was a party of Muslims.

But the Congress had denied the media reports as a 'rumour' and stated that it is a party of 132 crore Indians. "When the government is on the path of lying, then rumours become the main policy of the government," Congress' communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala had said.

Attacking Rahul Gandhi for his statements that the Congress was a Muslim party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had questioned the congress scion if his party is only for Muslims or for women too during an election rally.
