New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge sharply criticized the Modi government on Thursday, accusing it of failing to ensure women's safety. Kharge emphasized that instead of merely focusing on "Beti Bachao" (Save the Daughter), there is a pressing need to guarantee equal rights for women.

In his statement, Kharge questioned whether the recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee and the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act had been fully implemented. He expressed his frustration on social media platform X, stating, "Any injustice done to our women is intolerable, painful, and highly condemnable. We need to ensure 'Equal Rights for our Daughters,' not just 'Beti Bachao.' Women do not need protection; they need safety. Every hour, 43 crimes against women are recorded in the country. Every day, 22 crimes are reported against women and children from the most vulnerable Dalit-tribal communities. Countless crimes go unreported due to fear, intimidation, and social reasons."

Kharge called for serious reforms to enhance women's safety across various spheres of society. He advocated for measures such as a "Gender Sensitisation Curriculum," "Gender Budgeting," and basic facilities like street lights and public women's washrooms. He emphasized that while the Constitution grants equal status to women, crimes against them remain a grave issue that demands collective action.

The Congress President criticized the Modi government for its lack of effective and preventive measures. He argued that superficial efforts, like painting "Beti Bachao" slogans on walls, would not bring about meaningful social change. "Prime Minister Modi has spoken about women's safety in his speeches at the Red Fort, but his government has not implemented concrete measures over the past decade to prevent crimes against women. Instead, his party has shamefully assassinated the character of victims. Will such superficial measures lead to genuine social change or improve the efficiency of our legal system?" Kharge questioned.

Kharge further alleged that the government and administration have attempted to obscure crimes by forcibly performing the last rites of victims. He asked, "Has the government and administration tried to hide crimes? Has the police prevented the last rites of victims to suppress the truth?"

Reflecting on the 2012 Nirbhaya incident in Delhi, Kharge questioned whether the recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee and the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, passed in 2013, are being properly implemented. He raised concerns about whether these measures are effectively creating a safe environment for women in the workplace.

Kharge's remarks follow the national outrage and numerous rallies sparked by the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
