New Delhi: Congress veteran Kapil Sibal has decided to leave the party and go to Rajya Sabha with the support of SP. He had also filed his nomination after reaching Lucknow on Wednesday itself. Even though the Congress has not reacted openly to this development, but inside the party, the atmosphere of fear is clearly visible. Now the party is preparing to send Mukul Wasnik from Maharashtra, who has been a part of the rebel Congress faction G-23, to the Upper House.

The G-23, a group of dissidents from Maharashtra, included only two leaders, Prithviraj Chavan and Mukul Wasnik. But Congress is considering sending Mukul Wasnik to the vacant seat of Rajya Sabha. It is being told that she is scared of Kapil Sibal's departure. Now she does not want to lose other big leaders. It is noteworthy that in August 2020, a letter was written by G-23 leaders to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, demanding major changes in the organisation.

This letter was written after the Lok Sabha elections and consecutive defeats in the states. The leaders who wrote this letter included many senior leaders including Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Kapil Sibal, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Prithviraj Chavan. A senior Congress leader said that Mukul Wasnik could be the party's candidate for the June 10 Rajya Sabha elections.
