New Delhi: On October 5, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court handed down sentences to the convicts in the Tara Shahdeo religious conversion case. Tara Shahdeo's ex-husband Rakib-ul Hasan was sentenced to life imprisonment, while his mother Kaushar Rani received ten years of imprisonment. The then registrar of the High Court, Mustaque Ahmed, who was accused of conspiring in the case, was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment.

National shooter Tara Shahdeo had been pressured to convert her religion by her ex-husband Rakib-ul Hasan, also known as Ranjit Kohli, after their marriage in 2014. The CBI filed a chargesheet in the Tara Shahdeo case in 2017. Expressing her thoughts on the matter, Tara Shahdeo stated that no woman should be assaulted or coerced into changing her faith. She expressed gratitude to the court and the CBI for delivering justice, emphasizing that this verdict would not only benefit her but also inspire trust in every daughter in the country. She highlighted the importance of preventing such incidents and openly addressing the issue.

Meanwhile, the lawyer of convicted Rakib-ul Hasan, Mukhtar Ahmed, confirmed the development and stated that they would appeal against the court's decision before the High Court. He argued that this was a matter of family dispute and that the individuals involved were first-time offenders. The CBI court's sentencing comes after it convicted all three principal accused in the Tara Shahdeo conversion case on September 30. The case was filed by the national-level shooter against her estranged husband Rakib-ul Hasan, her mother-in-law Kaushar Rani, and one other, accusing them of subjecting her to multiple atrocities and attempting to forcibly convert her to Islam against her will.

Rakib-ul Hasan was found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal conspiracy, physical relationship on the promise of marriage, voluntarily causing hurt, wounding religious sentiments, criminal intimidation, and fraudulent marriage ceremony. The case dates back to 2014 when Tara Shahdeo married Rakib-ul Hasan, believing him to be a Hindu. However, Rakib-ul Hasan, along with his mother Kaushar Rani and others, began pressuring Tara Shahdeo to convert to Islam after their marriage. The victim filed a complaint against them, alleging misrepresentation and harassment.

Tara Shahdeo endured a month of physical and mental torment, including threats, beatings, and pressure to convert to Islam. She suffered severe injuries before deciding to break free from the abusive situation. The case was eventually taken up by the CBI in 2015, and charges were filed in Delhi in 2017. After a long legal battle, including obtaining a divorce from Rakib-ul Hasan in 2018, Tara Shahdeo expressed her faith in the judiciary and thanked those who supported her throughout the process.
