Corona becomes foe for many families, 1.5 lakh innocent orphans

New Delhi: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has informed the Supreme Court that a total of 1,47,492 children have lost either or both of their parents due to coronavirus and other reasons since April 1, 2020.  In a case of suo motu cognizance of the care and safety of children deprived of parental love amid the Corona epidemic, NCPCR has said that the data has been drawn on data uploaded by states and Union Territories on their Bal Swaraj portal - Covid Care' till January 11.

The affidavit filed through advocate Swarupma Chaturvedi stated that the data uploaded till January 11 shows that the total number of children requiring care and safety is 1,47,492, with the number of orphans losing 10,094 and the number of children losing either parent or parent at 1,36,910 and the number of abandoned children at 488.

The affidavit also mentions that out of the total children, the highest number of 59,010 children are in the age group of 8 to 13 years, while the second place is 4 to 7 years of age, with a total figure of 26,080. According to statistics, the total number of children between the ages of 14 and 15 is 22,763 and the total number of children in the age group of 16 to 18 years is 22,626. As per the information received so far, the Commission has also issued a notice of the present status of children's shelter, according to which the maximum number of children (1,25,205) are with either parent or parent, while 11,272 children are with family members and 8,450 children are with their parents. The affidavit said 1,529 children are living in children's homes, 19 in open shelter homes, two in observation homes, 188 in orphanages, 66 in special adoption agencies and 39 in hostels.
